Reuse Network has released its Social Impact Report 2024, calling for greater cross-sector collaboration to boost reuse and tackle some of the country’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.
The report highlights the significant impact Reuse Network members and partners have made in providing access to essential goods for low-income households, despite the ongoing strain of the cost-of-living crisis. However, the report also emphasises that increased support from all sectors is essential to meet the growing demand for affordable household items and to further reduce the environmental footprint of consumer goods.
“Reuse is an essential part of the solution to some of the biggest challenges we face today, from poverty to climate change,” said Craig Anderson, CEO at Reuse Network. “We need stronger collaboration between manufacturers, retailers, policymakers, consumers, and the charity sector to create a more sustainable and equitable system. The benefits of reuse extend far beyond waste management; it is key to building a circular economy and improving the lives of those most in need.”
The report also details how the cost-of-living crisis has led to a reduction in product donations as people hold on to their goods longer and buy fewer new items.
According to data from the report, the reuse sector helped support 1.5 million households gain access to the essential items they need to create a sustainable home, saving them £321.2million compared to buying these items new.
However, the report highlights that 2.55 million items were reused last year, down from 2.6 million in 2023, and down by almost 1 million items compared to data collected in 2019.
“The shortage of donated furniture has been one of the toughest challenges this year,” said Craig.
“Many people who would have donated items in the past are facing their own financial difficulties, and as a result, we’ve seen a decline in the volume of donations. This is particularly problematic because furniture is one of the most-needed items for families transitioning out of homelessness, those on low incomes, or those affected by domestic violence. Without these donations, charities are finding it harder to provide a dignified standard of living for those who need help most.”
Despite these obstacles, Reuse Network and its partners have made significant strides in their efforts to address poverty and increase access to affordable, reused items. By partnering with organisations like The Appliance Recycling Group (ARG), the network has been able to deliver thousands of items, to those in need, alleviating some of the financial burdens faced by low-income households. The partnership, which has already helped 920 families, saved them £172,500, and diverted 1,150 products from landfill is a key example of how commercial collaborations can contribute to both social good and environmental sustainability.
“Partnerships like this show how, by working together, we can not only reduce waste but also help families facing financial hardship by providing access to affordable, essential goods”, Craig added. “However, we need to scale up our efforts to ensure the sector can continue to provide vital support.”
“We need greater cross-sector collaboration and investment in reuse initiatives if we are to ensure that charities can continue making a difference in the face of such profound challenges. There are big issues and opportunities to be discussed and actioned by the sector to do our bit to improve society and build a sustainable solution through reuse”.
At the Reuse Network, we work with reuse charities and commercial partners to help alleviate furniture poverty to ensure everyone has a sustainable home. Find out how you can collaborate with us to support our mission.
