Posted on the 12th September 2024

Reuse Network was thrilled to host a panel discussion at this year’s RWM Expo, bringing together experts from charity, commercial and academia to discuss the role of reuse in the circular economy.

Our CEO, Craig Anderson led the the discussion with panellists , Nasrin Asgari, Associate Professor in Supply Chain Management, Anglia Ruskin University, Tania Laugier, Project Manager, DHL Envirosolutions, and Simon Westgarth, CEO, Richmond Furniture Scheme

Collaboration is key

The panellists emphasised the need for collaboration across sectors to encourage and promote reuse as a solution to the environmental crisis. They also highlighted the need to ‘think outside of the waste box’ to prevent good quality items from ending up in waste steams, and shared how charities are coming up with innovative solutions to stop the growing mountain of items being sent to waste each year.

Tania Laugier, discussed the White Goods Return Scheme, a successful collaboration between Reuse Network, DHL and Currys, showcasing how commercial and charity sectors can work together to divert items from waste streams and into the homes of people who need them.

Nasrin Asgari and Simon Westgarth shared insights on the ‘Mega Skip’ event by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Richmond Furniture Scheme attend the events to rescue reusable furniture items and share information about reuse.

The discussion emphasised the social value of reuse and highlighted that organisations looking to develop strategies that include reuse should reflect on whether their values and objectives align with supporting reuse.

Overall, the discussion emphasized the social and environmental value of reuse, underscoring the need for buy-in from all stakeholders involved to drive its success.
