Buy Nothing New Day 2024

Buy Nothing New Day is back!

Buy Nothing New Day is back on Friday 29 November! Our annual campaign is an ethical alternative to Black Friday and urges people to support their local reuse charities on one of the biggest shopping days of the year and buy pre-loved instead of buying new.

Did you know?

In 2023, eBay reported that UK households discard around half a million tonnes of furniture a year. And according to their research, the average person looks to refresh their home around three times a year.

Just under a third of people have thrown away furniture, electrical items and homewares in good enough condition that they could have been re-used, sold or donated

It takes around 1000X more CO2 to make a new piece of furniture compared to refurbishing an old piece.

Research by WRAP found that buying used could save households £2.37b, while avoiding 62,255 tonnes of carbon emissions (the equivalent of taking over 28,000 cars off the road for a year).

An ethical alternative to Black Friday

Now in its seventh year, Buy Nothing New Day shines a light on reuse and the charities making a difference to people, planet, and pocket.

In 2023, the reuse sector as a whole reused 2.6 million furniture and electrical items. Low-income households saved £335.3m by buying reused instead of new items, and 96,643 tonnes of CO2 emissions were saved.

Every day, Reuse Network members are diverting household items from landfill and into the homes of people who need them, to help reduce poverty, tackle waste and offer a brighter and better future for the most isolated individuals in our society. Find out more about what we do.

So, this Black Friday, why not make a stand for secondhand? Every purchase you make with a reuse charity helps to support the valuable work they do in our communities.

What can I do on Buy Nothing New Day?
