Recycled craft kits broaden Scrap Store appeal

Posted on the 12th September 2025

Reuse Network member, Emmaus Bolton’s Scrap Store has launched a new line of creative reuse packs especially designed for schools, early years settings and community groups.

Finding a new use for unwanted materials

The packs are made entirely from donated surplus and dismantled materials, including fabric, paper, buttons, ribbons, haberdashery, and more — all sorted and prepared by volunteers at the charity’s on-site Recycling Centre.

This new initiative is part of the charity’s mission to promote environmental sustainability through reuse while supporting the local community. All funds raised help Emmaus Bolton’s core work, providing a home, support and opportunities for people with experience of homelessness.

The packs are tailored to different age ranges and project types, from collage and junk modelling for younger children, to textile-based activities for older learners and adult groups.

“Each pack is unique and filled with potential,” said Emmaus Bolton’s Chief Executive Officer Tony Stephenson. “We want to inspire imagination while showing that reuse isn’t just good for the planet — it’s fun, affordable and educational too.”

The materials are clean donations from local businesses and the charity’s textile dismantling operation, where clothing that can’t be resold is taken apart and saved from landfill.

Everyone at the charity helps out. People supported by the charity deconstruct items alongside volunteers at the Recycling Centre. People who are part of Emmaus Bolton also participate in the smooth running of the social enterprise’s charity shops and donation vans.

The packs are produced with minimal cost and can be adapted to different audience needs or seasonal events.
